    Chinese Lunar New Year 2023 

    • On this Monday, January 23, all students celebrating the Lunar New Year are welcome to wear cultural clothing or red in replacement of their school uniform.  Students not participating must be dressed in formal uniform, with the exception of the students who are scheduled for ice skating.

    Badminton - Grade 6 to 9 Boys and Girls

    • Badminton tryouts will continue this week.  We have had an impressive amount of students show up for the tryouts in each grade and it will take a few weeks before we will be able to finalize the teams.  This year we will host four teams from our school at the badminton divisional with a Grade 6-8 boys and girls junior team consisting of 22 players and a Grade 8-9 team consisting of 22 players. All athletes who are chosen on the school team, will play at the MNP Community Centre (formerly known as the Repsol Centre) during the school day. Divisional dates: Junior Team - Tuesday, March 7th from 9:30am to 2:00pm and Senior Team - Wednesday, March 8th from 9:30am to 2:00pm.

    Ice Skating:

    Thanks to all of the parents who have been able to volunteer for next week.  We would like to remind students to remember to dress for the weather and for the outdoor skating rink – mittens/gloves, snow pants, winter jackets etc.  On days that students are scheduled to skate, they are allowed to where athletic clothing, instead of their school uniform. For students without their own equipment, skates and hockey helmets will be provided for students.  Any students riding the bus with equipment, please remember to bring your skates in a covered back pack etc. -  skate guards are encouraged, for the safety of all riders.

    Accessing Report Cards through MyCBE – January 30th:

    ​​​Families will be able to view online student report cards for grade 1-12 students on Jan. 30. Report cards for the 2022-23 school year can be viewed, downloaded and printed.

    Parents and guardians can log in to MyCBE to view student information including report cards, comments from your child’s teacher, assignments and grades and attendance information. For best access to information, log in to the MyCBE portal instead of using the PowerSchool app.

    ​The Calgary Board of Education is inviting all community members to join us for an inspiring evening of conversation with experts in substance use.

    The CBE's Well-Being team will host free online sessions where parents will be able to ask questions to experts in the field of health promotion. The sessions will not be recorded, however those that sign-up will have an option to receive follow-up materials.

    ​​​CBE educators believe that parents and caregivers can inspire their kids to make healthy lifestyle choices and increase protective factors — in order to do so, they need the right tools and information.

    Since our understanding of student health and well-being is evolving, it is important for parents to stay up-to-date on the same information so everyone is supporting student success.

    The intention of the series is to advance student well-being by raising family and caregiver's understanding of a variety of health-related topics. Each session focuses on reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors.

    School Update and Important Dates - October 

     

    Happy Thanksgiving Grizzly Families,

    I hope everyone has been able to relax over the long weekend and spend time with friends and family.  The students, teachers and families have put forth a tremendous effort since the start of the school year, establishing routines and building academic stamina and this break is always well timed and much deserved, which allows for us all to refresh and get set for the next few months of school. 

    As a parent, you should have had the chance to connect with your child's teacher'(s), and should now have a better understanding of your child's academic progress, whether they are in Kindergarten or they are in Grade 9.  This is a good time to remind our families that we have high expectations and when it comes to homework, we expect that you are ensuring that you are checking each day for classroom work/assignments (Google Classroom & D2L) and ensuring that projects are being completed and that you are helping and/or providing time for your child to study for upcoming quizzes and tests. For our younger students, we also expect that you are finding time to ensure your child is reading and/or reading along with you and spending time on IXL Math etc. Students who can create these positive habits early will be much more prepared and it will help build their confidence as they begin to read and write and be challenged critically in all subject areas as they advance through each grade.  

    If your child is not completing this work and/or not getting the support they need, then I have asked for teachers to reach out to connect with families to understand what is needed to ensure their students are able to reach their academic potential.

    Our students have a lot to be proud thus far, and a lot to look forward to in the next few months.  I want to thank all of the cross country runners and the boys soccer team for a successful season of play.  The coaches of both teams could not be prouder of their young athletes, as they all improved throughout September and we can't wait to see how they will do next season after another year of growth.  Glamorgan is blessed with some amazing runners and young athletes and our goal for next year is to increase the number of cross country team members, as well as have enough girls for a soccer team.

    Our girls volleyball team also started in September and will continue playing into November, as the have a longer season of play.  They have been getting better after each game and continue, they should have a good chance of finishing near the top of their pool.  Good luck in the rest of your games!

    I also want to thank the students in Grade 9 who participated in the Western High school debate. The students who attended did an excellent job and the Grade 9 team is excited to see how they progress in upcoming debates throughout the year.

    WARM YOUR HEART WITH FROZEN JR. AT GLAMORGAN SCHOOL

    Playing at Glamorgan School in Calgary

    Disney's Frozen JR. is playing at Glamorgan School on May 24 and May 25, 2023. The spectacular 60-minute musical, designed for middle school aged performers, is based on the 2013 Disney film and the 2018 Broadway adaptation. Students in grades 5 through 9 are invited to participate in this year's cast. Those interested in auditioning for the play are asked to attend a lunchtime meeting on Tuesday Oct 11, 2022 in the Band Room. Each student will receive a short script and song piece to prepare for their audition. Auditions will take place during lunch breaks between October 24th and November 4th.  An audition schedule will be posted next week outside Room 6, Ms. Bosnak's room. For those interested in being part of our set design crew, we ask that you attend a lunchtime meeting on Oct 11, 2022 in Mrs. Kindervator's room 9.

    Do you want to build a snowman? You'll love this fanciful and heartwarming stage adaptation of the top-grossing animated film of all time! Join Anna, Elsa, and all of your favorite characters as they embark on an epic, ice-filled journey of self-discovery, camaraderie, and the real meaning of true love.  Adapted for young performers, this musical includes favorite Frozen songs such as “Love Is an Open Door," “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?," and “Let It Go," as well as wonderful new songs from the Broadway production. With its empowering message of love and understanding, Frozen JR. is sure to melt your heart!

    Information on purchasing tickets and performance times will be sent out in early Spring 2023.

    School Playground Hours

    We kindly ask that parents picking up and/or dropping off students during the school day that you do not use the school playground without direct parent supervision.  Children are not allowed to use the playground if a classroom comes outside to use it during instructional hours (Daily Physical Education) and/or recess.  Please use the community playground if this happens.

     

    Parking and Patrols

    Our Grade 6 students have started patrols and we are reminding our families once again to be mindful of the safety of our students and families, especially at the beginning and end of the school day.  We ask that you always obey the rules of the road, as we still have many parents performing U-turns after dropping off, students crossing the road (sometimes with parents) without using the crosswalk, walking behind or in front of our school busses and parking in the bus zone.  We realize parking is stressful with minimal parking, but we need everyone to work together to make it safe for our students and families coming to and from school each and every day.

    Student Health Plan / Student Health Emergency Response Protocol

    If your child has a health concern or medical condition that the school needs to be aware of please submit the necessary form(s) by Monday October 3rd  2022. You can find these forms in your MyCBE account School Engage under demographic verification/forms you may need.  Student health plans need to be updated and submitted yearly.

     

    Demographics Deadline

  • Welcome Back Breakfast

    Welcome Back Breakfast - Friday 8:00 am - 9:20 am

     

    Dear Grizzly Families,

    We want to remind everyone that we are hosting our Welcome Back Breakfast this Friday morning from 8:00 am – 9:00 am.  We are excited to meet many of our families that are able to join in the event and hope that you get the opportunity to meet with some of our teachers and staff, as well as our Parent Council members who have organized the event.

    Parking:  We understand that parking can be limited.  We still ask that you do not park in the bus zone. We will have a teacher welcoming parents as well as monitoring the parking to help/inform parents where they can park.  Parents looking for additional parking must park on the sidewalks beyond the bus zones and/or at the community centre across from the school.

    Time: We will be ready to serve parents starting at 8:00 am.  Parents are welcome to stay with their child while having breakfast and visiting with other parents or staff members. We ask that all parents leave the school campus no later than 9:20 am. 

    Supervision: Supervision will start at 8:30 am.  We ask that parents stay with their child until 8:30 am.  We will have a supervisors in front of the school, on the tarmac, the play ground and throughout the side and back fields. 

    Bus students:We will allow all bus students to participate in the breakfast and therefore will be keeping students outside until 9:20 am (longer if necessary) in order for all students to have to opportunity to have the breakfast provided.

    Food Location: Glamorgan School Gymnasium – please enter NW doors where you will be directed to the Gymnasium

    Glamorgan Classroom Letter & Introduction

     

    Good Evening Grizzly Families,

    By now everyone should have received an introductory letter from their classroom or homeroom teacher.  If you haven't received any communication, we ask that you please email or call the school.  The office will continue to respond to all the parent questions and requests as soon as they can and we thank you for your patience and understanding with response times.

    Finding out whose class you are in can be extremely exciting, but can also be a stressful time for students, especially if they are unsure of who they are paired with and/or if they do not know the teacher. We understand that students may not always get to be with their best friend and/or with the teacher they were hoping to be with. It is important to note that the staff involved in each grade were very thoughtful and considered many factors, such as student learning styles, dynamics and existing friendships when making our class lists and deciding on which students and classroom teacher would be best suited for your child's learning.

    We often field many requests from parents asking us to switch or at the minimum, consider moving their child into another classroom.  Please note that only under rare and/or special circumstances will a student be moved classes.  Having to move a student after all class lists have been finalized can have a negative impact on the rest of the students and will often create more challenges that will be difficult to fix.

    We therefore ask that parents only send requests if they have spoken to the school in the past regards to their concerns, if something recent has come up we are not aware of and needs to be addressed immediately or we made an administrative mistake (input error, missed email etc.).

    January 28, 2022 Principal Message

     

    Dear Grizzly Families,

     

    I would like to thank all of our families for your continued support and effort to help keep our school running safe as possible for the month of January, with a special shout-out to our Kindergarten families for helping us transition to four days of online learning this month.  As of now, we have been fortunate enough to keep the rest of our Grade Teams in-person, and we will continue to do our best to keep our classes in school.

    This effort has not been without a cost to our staff and our families.  All of our teachers have stepped up to cover classes every day in the last few weeks when multiple staff were away and many of our parents have managed to provide support at home when dealing with sick children.  This extra burden on families to arrange home care and continue to support their learning is greatly appreciated.  I also want to thank families for keeping siblings home when they are a close contact, as this further supports our school in providing teachers and students to proceed in-person as safe as possible.

    School Updates:

    Masks and Rapid Tests

    I have just confirmed with the courier that our shipment will finally be arriving this afternoon.  This means, we should hopefully have the test kits and mask out to students by the end of day Tuesday.  Again, I thank you for your patience in this process and if anything changes come Monday, the office will send a message to let parents know. 

    Monday – NO SCHOOL & Updated Office Hours

    Just a reminder that school will be back in session on Tuesday, February 1st. Office hours will be adjusted on Monday from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.  We will only have one staff member in the office, so we ask that you email Glamorgan@cbe.ab.ca if you have any questions or concerns.  If your inquiry is emergent, please call the school and leave a message and someone will return you call as soon as they can.

    School Update - January 9 

     

    Good Evening Grizzly Families,

    By now, many families may have heard from your child's classroom teacher, and we wanted to send a school wide update to follow the CBE emails you have received over the past few days.

    We realize last week may have been challenging for many of our families with school off, I thank you for your support and I want you to know that we have worked hard to continue to provide a safe and supported environment for our students and teachers, given the current circumstances.  I speak for all of our teachers and support staff when I say that they are excited to have students returning back to school in our building tomorrow morning.

    Student Attendance

    Please refer to the Alberta Daily Checklist if you are unsure of attending school due to symptoms, illness, close contact etc. If you are still unsure, please call the office during regular school hours.

    School Mask Updates

    Due to the current health situation, we are encouraging parents to speak with their child about the importance of wearing their masks appropriately in school.  We ask that you speak with your child and ensure that there is an extra mask in your child's backpack.  We have not received any masks at this point, but we anticipate to receive medical grade masks by the end of the week.  A message will be sent out to all families with this update as soon as they come in.

    D2L and Google Classroom

    We have asked all teachers to do there very best to continue to update their online presence as many times as possible throughout the week.  Please note that teachers are not expected at this point to provide lessons or instruction online for those students not able to attend due to COVID policies. Check D2L or Google Classroom daily for any classroom updates. 

    School Sports - Basketball

    As a school, we have unfortunately made the difficult decision to postpone our extracurricular activities in-person.  We realize many of our students have been working very hard prior to the break and have been looking forward to playing basketball in the new year, but we feel that this is in the best interest of teachers, coaches and students, based on our current health situation.

    Grade 9 Leadership

    Our Grade 9 Leadership students would like to thank all staff, students and families for their support with the December 2021 Food Drive.

    In total you donated 581 items as well as $505 in our online fundraiser. 

    The winners for each division have earned a casual week January 10-14 ( Grade 3, 6 & 7 ) 

    • The winner for Division 1 is grade 3 with 140 donation items
    • The winner for Division 2 is grade 6 with 103 donation items
    • The winner for Division 3 is grade 7 with 28 donation items

    All other grades are asked to wear formal uniform on Monday January 10 and informal uniform Tuesday - Thursday with a casual day for all students Friday Jan 14th , to celebrate this year's successful food drive.

    Dear Grizzly Families,
    I can hardly believe that we have only two more weeks of school until the Winter Break. These last few months have been full of a variety of amazing learning opportunities for every one of our students and they all deserve some time off to rest, play and be with family and friends over the holidays. Along with the support of our amazing staff, they should be proud of the work they have put forth to help create a strong, caring, and collaborative environment for students to learn and achieve success, and with an ever-increasing amount of positive energy from students and staff at the school, I cannot wait to see what the new year will have in store for us.
    I am extremely proud of the work our students put forth every day in their class and at home. As I walk the hallways each day, or visit classrooms to observe various lessons, I continue to be amazed of the level of student engagement, as well as their commitment to thriving academically in all our classes. Our teachers have worked tirelessly throughout this time, supporting their classrooms and every one of their students and, they too, deserve a time to rest, play and be with family and friends over the holidays.
    My hope for the remainder of the school year, is that everyone continues to stay healthy, happy, and safe. I know all the staff at Glamorgan cannot wait to see all our students’ strengths emerge as we are heading into the second half of the school year.     Parent Teacher Conferences
    Our recent Parent-Teacher Conferences were held virtually again this year, and we are pleased to say they were very well attended by parents and students. Most of our parents had the opportunity to sign-up, but unfortunately, some of our families were unable to book a time or had difficulty navigating the system. If you were unable to meet with your child's teacher, please reach out to them through email to arrange a time to meet with them online or in person.
    PowerSchool, Brightspace D2L and Google Classroom
    Ongoing communication between the home and school is important for student success. Junior High Teachers are using PowerSchool to support real time communication of student progress and continue to update their Brightspace D2L shell and/or Google Classroom with updated assignments and assessments. For our Elementary classes, using PowerSchool is relatively new, and most teachers are in the learning phase using this tool. However, all Grades 1-9 will be using PowerSchool to enter summative marks and report cards will once again be made available online. Most of our Elementary classes are using Google Classroom, as well as classroom agendas and/or emailing to share communication with families. If you have not yet created your MyCBE/PowerSchool account, please access the CBE website (cbe.ab.ca/support/Pages/MyCBE-PowerSchool-Creating-Account.aspx) to find information and tutorials on creating your MyCBE/PowerSchool account. This is also an excellent time to remind everyone that all report cards will be available digitally this year and you will need to access your account to view your child’s report card. Report Cards will be available to view starting on Monday January 31, 2022.
    Online Activity at Home
    We continue ask for parents’ and guardians’ support as we continue to work on educating our students and families while they navigate the various worlds of social media. We are finalizing new programs and digital
    citizenship lessors for our Grade 6-9 students, and we will share any information that may be beneficial to our parent community, as our understanding grows. I continue to encourage all families, Elementary students included, to have an open policy at home, where parents have access to all streams of communication that they can and should be monitoring online. The most popular amongst our Junior High students is Discord,
    School Safety
    We have had several concerns sent in regarding traffic safety at both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up at the school. Below is important feedback gathered below from our Grade 6 traffic patrollers, safety supervisors, students, and families. We kindly ask that you please consider the safety of our students, by following the school signage and following the city traffic laws
    • Drivers doing U-turns in the playground zone
    • Drivers speeding in the playground zones
    • Drivers parking on the opposite side of the road/against the traffic/in the opposing lane
    • Drivers leading the students to cross in places other than the cross walk
    • Drivers double parking to drop students off
    • Drivers dropping off in the bus zone
    • Drivers not aware of the city posted traffic signs
    • Drivers ignoring the school signs and ignoring the city posted signs
    • Drivers dropping students off in the cross walk

    Home Reading Program
    Our home reading program is continuing to have success and thanks to our parent volunteers, we can help build on our reading program for our division 1 students with the support of our families at home.

    A big thank you goes out to our parent council and our own volunteer parents for making such a fabulous lunch for our teachers in the first Thursday of Parent Teacher Interviews. The food and drinks were outstanding and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity – it really means a lot.
    FunScrip Fundraiser
    From School Council...
    Our sincere gratitude goes out to the families who were able to participate in purchasing gift cards to help raise money for our School Council. We have made $1000 through the FundScrip fundraiser, which is great! The funds will support School Council investments at Glamorgan School, including Home Reading, RazKids, Jump Math, IXL, Science Fair, Sports Day, Patrols,
    staff appreciation, teacher-driven spend for each grade and for specialty areas (band, music, French, library, etc.) … and more

    Minecraft Minecraft Club has just wrapped up. 83 students joined the club from K - 9, and they met online each Wednesday from home at 5 PM with Mrs. Schmidt as the facilitator.

    Science Fair

    Dear Parents and Guardians,
    Yesterday was the first meeting of the Glamorgan School Science Fair (GSSF). It was wonderful to see so many students online. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we get used to these new online formats. We wanted to send out this message as we recognize that some students were unable to make the first meeting and we want to include as many students as possible by providing the following updates:
    - All further communication, including meeting updates and Google Meet Codes, will occur on our blog: http://gssciencefair.weebly.com/
    - Any student who wishes to join the GSSF may still join as long as they read the slides and complete Assignment 1 by end of day Monday.
    - By completing Assignment 1, your child agrees to meet the GSSF expectations outlined in last night’s meeting.
    - We will be meeting Thursday, December 9 and Thursday, December 16 at 4:30 pm.
    - We recognize some students take the bus and arrive home late. As our meetings are around an hour, we cannot shift the meeting time.
    -We ask those students arriving late to join the Google Meet as soon as possible and know that we are understanding as to why they have arrived late.
    - We encourage students to focus on completing an amazing science fair project rather than focus on going to CYSF.
    - Please be flexible and patient as we use this new online science fair platform.

    Community Building – Calgary Food Drive December 1st – December 13th

    Glamorgan is hosting a school-wide food drive and virtual fundraiser. The food drive continues next week and until December 13th, 2021. We are partnering with Calgary Food Drive to accomplish this goal. The drive is looking for several types of Pasta. Our boxes are starting to fill up!! Way To Go Grizzlies!!     We are excited to share our 1st Virtual Assembly of the 2021-2022 school year.     The annual winter wonderland has arrived. This is our winter spirit week! Each day between December 13-17, your child will participate in activities to mark the last week of school for 2021. They will have special dress up days and during the week they will participate in various activities. These are the activities:
    Dress up days:
    Monday, December 13: Winter hat day (Any appropriate winter themed hat is allowed)
    Tuesday, December 14: Cozy Sweaters (Wear ugly or a favorite sweater/hoodie)
    Wednesday, December 15: Winter themed dress up day
    Thursday, December 16: Candy cane day (Dress in red and white)
    Friday, December 17: Pajama Day

    Principal and School Update 

     

    Dear Grizzliy Families,

    November already…

    As I reflect back on the first two months, I am amazed at how much our students and staff have accomplished in such a short time and how excited and proud I am to be a part of the Grizzly family.  From the first days of school, seeing our Kindergarten students arrive for the first time and watching our Grade 1's doing everything in their power to not fall asleep at the end of their first full day of school (how exhausting), it's hard to believe how far they have come.  Our soccer season has come and gone (congrats to our school team), our Leadership students have survived Halloween (wow!), our Junior High students are back in lockers and our Minecraft club is off and running, with many exciting events, clubs and sports teams to come in the next few months, it's exciting to be a Glamorgan Grizzly. 

    I would have to say that my favourite part of my role thus far, is to walk the hallways and enter the classrooms, where I realize each day, how lucky we are to have such a caring and thoughtful staff, where our students are learning together with their classmates and they are engaged in instructional tasks designed by our exceptional teachers each and every day. Although there are days when I'm still referred to as 'Mr. Principal', most of the students know me by name, they are always polite and respectful, and most importantly, they are always smiling and seem to be truly and genuinely happy to be in our school. And when I observe the work that is being done throughout our school and see the academic rigour and student output, I am constantly reminded how fortunate I am to be working in a school with families who value education and support the learning potential of their child. 

    I also want to acknowledge and thank all of our parent community, but most importantly the members of our parent council who do so much for our school community.  When I see the lasting legacy from the prior support the school has received, we are most fortunate to be blessed with such a supportive and hard working group of members, who only have the best interest of our students and teachers in mind.  Without the support of our council members, our students wouldn't have access to the resources and activities they have and will continue to do so throughout the school year.  I would encourage more of our parents to get involved when and wherever possible and support our parent community.  Please see the Parent Council portion of our school website for more information.

    Some Important Updates and Reminders for November:

    TLC – Uniform Reminder

    I ask that you please ensure that you child has the appropriate uniform as outlined in the TLC Standards of Practice.  We still have many students coming to school without formal dress on Monday's and/or not coming prepared with regular uniform throughout the week.  Students and families have had more than enough time to order or purchase clothing and all black shoes. If you are unable to purchase clothing for whatever reason, please contact the school to let us know.  I also ask that students wear fully black shoes with black laces.  Many students have come to school with black shoes that have different coloured soles and/or laces, which is not allowed. Running or athletic shoes are allowed, as long as they are all black.

    Remembrance Day

    To foster remembrance, Glamorgan is hosting a Remembrance Day poetry contest open to all students.  The theme is "What Do Remembrance and Peace Mean to You?" Please promote this opportunity with your child.  Students are invited to submit their poem by Thursday November 4th.   We apologize in advance for the quick turn-around-time.  Homeroom teachers will collect the poems and the Remembrance Day Committee will judge the poems by division, and the winning poems will be read aloud by the author/filmed for the virtual assembly held on Wednesday, November 10th (school veiwing only).

    Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC)

    All families will be invited to partake in our November PTC's on Thursday November 25th and Friday November 26th.  More information and details will be sent in the following week regarding timeline and PTC expectations.  All PTC's will be held virtually, as per our last Meet the Teacher event in September.
