Welcome to the 2024 – 2025 School Year at Glamorgan School

If your child will be attending a different school please let us know as soon as possible by emailing the school at glamorgan@cbe.ab.ca or calling the office between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm today.
The first day of school is tomorrow morning - Thursday, August 29, 2024.

School Parking
We understand that parking can be limited; however, parents and families must follow the rules of the road and only park in designated areas. For quick drop off, families must use the marked drop off zone near the staff parking lot. No stopping in the bus zone during the hours of 8:55 am – 9:15 am and at 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm. There will be no access to the staff parking lot at any time during the school year. Parents looking for additional parking must park along the sidewalks beyond the bus zones and/or at the community centre across the field from the school (accessed from 41 Avenue SW). Our community has kindly asked that we inform parents to not block driveway access when parking in from or near the school.
First Day Supervision
For tomorrow only, supervision will start at 8:50 am to welcome students. We ask that parents stay with their child until they are with their teachers. We will have supervisors in front
of the school, on the tarmac, on the play ground and throughout the side and back fields. Please note that attendance will not be checked until after school starts and the students are in their classrooms.
Parent Volunteers
We will be asking our parent community to sign up for many opportunities to support teaching and learning as well as special events throughout the school year. If you have not already volunteered in the past or you are new to the school, you will be required to have police clearance. If you want to volunteer and have further questions, please contact the school.
Personal Mobile Device
As you may have already heard, CBE is implementing restrictions on Personal Mobile Device & Social Media Use in Schools effective Aug. 29. This policy will comply with the Ministerial Order provided by the Government of Alberta this past June based on survey feedback provided by families.
CBE cares about the mental health and well-being of students. Restricting access to personal mobile devices and social media is expected to improve student achievement and learning outcomes. CBE strongly recommends students simply leave their devices at home, because in most cases, personal mobile devices are not needed to support student learning.
For students in kindergarten to Grade 9, CBE will use ‘away for the day’ guidelines, similar to what is in our school handbook. Personal mobile devices brought to school including cell phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers/headphones or any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet must be powered off or set in silent mode and stored out of sight in student lockers, backpacks or other designated area for the duration of the school day. As per our current policy, if a student chooses to bring their cell phone to school they are doing so at their own risk. Glamorgan School is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items and will not investigate missing electronics.
If a student is found to be using a personal mobile device in class without permission from the teacher, the CBE will work with the student to ensure the rules are understood and continue to follow our cell phone policy in our school handbook. We rely on good communication and other existing processes to ensure students know what is expected. When necessary, schools will use a progressive student discipline approach in working with students.
From current school policy:
If a student violates the cell phone policy:
- First time- a phone violation form will be filled out and phone will be turned into the office. Students may pick their phone up from the office at the end of the day.
- Second time- a phone violation form will be filled out and turned into office. Parents will be contacted. Students may pick their phone up from the office at the end of the day.
- Third time- parents will be contacted and a meeting will be requested to discuss further disciplinary actions for refusal to follow school rules and expectations.
These new rules will apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device for health and medical needs, it is advised that parents complete and submit a Student Health Plan as soon as possible or contact the school at glamorgan@cbe.ab.ca with the subject heading: Student Health Plan – Personal Mobile Request and a meet will be set with the school resource team to determine if the requests fulfills the medical requirements for accommodation.
For students who require access to a personal mobile device to support an identified educational need, families should contact the school to discuss this being included as an accommodation or support in the student’s individual program plan (IPP).
For English as an Additional Language Learners who require access to a personal mobile device, a new PMD Exception form will be approved by school administration in conversation with parents/guardians.
Also, aligned with the Ministerial Order, the CBE will restrict student access to all known social media platforms on the CBE network.
This policy will be in place for the first day of school. However, it is set to be reviewed in December, 2024. At that time, any feedback from schools will be considered before the Administrative Regulation is finalized as of Jan. 1, 2025.
Thank you for helping us to make this transition successful. For further resources, please view additional information on our website.
